Summer 2006

GNBCC’s 2006 summer scholarship program
GNBCC’s 2006 summer scholarship program at Tufts University was a tremendous success.  This year’s recipients, Monika Lalezarzadeh, from North High School and Sofie Einbinder, from South High School, learned valuable laboratory procedures and about research pertaining to environmental links to breast cancer at Ana Soto’s Laboratory at Tufts University Medical School.

Their reviews say it best.  Monika said, “I think the work being done between the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition and the Tufts Medical Laboratory is fantastic, informative and very educational.  It has inspired me to continue with laboratory work and studies, and apply what I had learned.”  Sofie adds, “it was truly a rare gift to participate in behind the scenes research on breast cancer.”

The laboratory skills they learned including staining mammary gland tissues on slides and how to use a gel electrophoresis (to separate macromolecules) which can isolate genes.  In addition, Monika and Sofie were taught of the potentially, harmful effects of exposure to the chemical, Bisphenol A, which is used in certain baby bottles and dental sealants.  They also learned that fetal exposure to this chemical may cause future offspring to develop breast cancer as adults.

To view Monika’s and Sofie’s essays on their experience at Ana Soto’s Laboratory at Tufts, visit the GNBCC website at: www.greatneckbcc.org.

May 12, 2006 - News: Going, Going, Green
You might expect that only people who work in occupations that expose them to a myriad chemicals or people who live adjacent to Superfund sites would be found to have high levels of chemicals in their blood and urine. But research done by the Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Working Group in Washington D.C. shows that measurable levels of 148 chemicals have been found in ordinary Americans of all ages, in all places. The measure of pollution in people is called "body burden." FULL STORY

SETBACKS: REALITIES OF THE WAR ON CANCER- A new film documentary
(released 7/06), Sponsored by the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition.

For decades, the medical establishment has focused on producing pharmaceutical weapons to fight cancer-but some scientists are disillusioned with that approach. This program looks at developments in late-20th century cancer research, showing how environmental and dietary studies have become marginalized. Biostatician, John Bailar, laments conventional wisdom, calling for more preventive emphasis, while Andrew Von Eschenbach, former National Cancer Institute director, ignores Nixon's 1971 declaration and blithely predicts a cure by 2015. The challenges involved in banning asbestos, expanding breast cancer awareness, and other concerns are also explored. (53 minutes)  Discussion of film to follow.
